filling small voids

The voids in your photos are structurally insignificant and can be filled pretty much any way you like. After years of teaching college students how to do this kind of stuff, I developed a...

flaperon position holder

I made a simple device that holds the tip of the flaperon firmly in place when the wing is off. Start with 2 scraps of 2x4 about 6 inches long. Hold one against the end of the flaperon and trace...

loose connector?

I started having occasional erratic temp indications on my left EGT at about 70 hours. Re-crimping the wire connectors up near the firewall penetration fixed it. At my next condition inspection I...

binder

I found a 2" slant D-ring at Office Depot. It just fits the entire package of drawings. Slant ring format that opens on the side saves a lot of wear on the holes in the sheets.

Vertical stab gap

Mine has roughly 1/16 gap all the way around the bottom edge. Too small to squeeze a rubber channel into. I would worry about vibration wearing grooves into the tailcone skin if the stab skin...

switch recommendation

The instructor's recommendation for an on/off switch was a general observation on Rotax 912 operating requirements. He did not know why Van's chose not to include a switch on the RV-12 but said the...

short surges of low fuel pressure

I installed the later-design fuel tank vent line, so that is not an issue. I also added an on/off switch for the electric fuel pump, at the recommendation of instructor in my Rotax iRMT class. For...

E-LSA

I had my airworthiness inspection as E-LSA in July 2016 followed by first flight a few weeks later. 168 hours now. To me a big advantage of E-LSA is the abbreviated flight test requirement. I have...

pin position

My new, dry 861 188 floats (shorter brass tube slider) all floated with lower side of the pin just touching the fuel surface. Again, 3.13-3.16 g each when dry. This seems to be about as good as it...

more info tidbits

In my original post (#19) there is a typo. I replaced the original 861 182 floats per SB in 10/2015 not 10/2016. The engine had never been fueled at that point. When I experienced fuel dripping...

another data sequence

My engine came with 861 182 floats in 2015. Per Service Bulletin I replaced them 10/2016 with 861 184 (2 dots) before ever running the engine. After a smooth first flight in 9/2016 I found fuel...

I weighed mine wings-off to decide how to secure it on the trailer for transport to the airport. It was 590.2 lb. and CG arm = 77.53 in. aft of datum. That is CG 16.57 in. fwd of main gear, 47.33...

Maybe I shouldn't reply without going to my hangar to look. But after the crescent moon bending process to get the first set in, I think I was able to just shorten the cotter pin with wire cutters...

stab bearings slipping

I actually had the bearings slip sideways enough to make the HS skin rub against the left side tailcone skin. It happened soon after assembly, before I even made my first flight. I whacked the end...

FYI here's a relatively current status on the floats. I was at Lockwood in mid April for the Rotax service course. They had no floats in stock and did not know when they would get more, but were...

I agree. That's the kind of safety net that I would prefer to see.

But on a 3/8 bolt the area that would have to fail in shear to pull out the threads is pretty big. A few hundred pounds tension...

The KAI says jacking the plane at the wing tiedowns is OK. If you can jack it you can lift it. It's the same applied loads and the same supporting structure. It would make me feel uncomfortable to...

tomkk forwarded an email to me from Van's engineering. It says there is a design glitch on single EFIS panels due to a wiring decision made when accommodating dual EFIS displays. I did the...
