There are little thin seals that you can purchase that go between both parts for situations like yours. ACS use to carry them. Just looked them up they call them Del fitting seals.

Make sure your hole in your puller is very snug...

Make sure your hole in your puller is very snug to the stem. A loose tip will not pull well, ask me how I know? You might even have to use an under size tip and drill it out to the size you need.

I do not recall any problem tapping. I used Rapid tap and a good die. Rather than buying a can, try a local shop and see if you can steel a few drops. It really makes a difference.
