Is bonding necessary?

I recently finished my left aileron and have to say it turned out to be the best trailing edge yet (flaps, rudder, elevators, etc). Not that this had anything to do with the finish, but I did not use vhb or proseal.

Obviously there will be respomses that ?it was in the plans so you should have done it,? but is the bonding absolutely necessary or is the tape meant to hold things together while riveting?

As I understand it, bonding is only to help with alignment in the assembly process.
