A few things that might be interesting -

The early RV-3 engine mounts only had the four perimeter attachment points to the fuselage.

The current RV-3 engine mounts have two additional ones in the bottom middle. These are co-planar with the others, since the RV-3 firewall is flat.

The current RV-4 engine mount has six mounts somewhat like the RV-3 mount, but the middle bottom two are inclined forward of the vertical and are not in the plane of the others, because the RV-4 has a different firewall that includes an angled bump-forward to allow more foot room. I don't know if older RV-4 engine mounts also had these two additional points.

Hi Dave,

Yes, that's interesting indeed. That's pretty much the final proof that the previous owner was mistaken about the RV-4 engine mount. At this point, I'm sure he just didn't recall the details, and was actually referring to the lower firewall weldments. I looked at those yesterday, and they're clearly newer than everything else, with a different paint finish, so the mystery is solved.

Appreciate the replies!

I just measured my RV-3B and it is 27 & 7/8" inches from the ground to the bottom of the firewall parked in the hangar.

Thanks guys. I think we have overwhelming evidence that around 28" is the normal measurement. Now I'll just try to quit wondering why my old one was shorter :-)

Seriously, it was a completely custom motor mount, so I'm sure that's probably the reason.
