Alodining the skins - How To?

Phil

Well Known Member
I need to alodine my skins before applying primer and paint.

What's the secret to applying alodine to a large surface like a wing, horz stab, etc?? How do you keep it in place long enough for the chemical conversion to take place?

Thanks,
Phil

Alodining skins

I used a spray bottle and a paint brush to keep the surface wet but it comes out blotchy. I dont think it will ever come out as uniform as submerging the part but some protection is better than none.

Phil,

I am assuming we are talking about clad aluminum and I am curious if you acid etched it (just before Alodine application). As for Alodine a plant atomizer type sprayer will work fine (use the appropriate breathing mask). There are different dwell times based on which Alodine you choose. After the correct dwell time rinse well with water.

It will likely be soda blasted followed by a rinse and then alodine.

I expect there will be mild etching of the surfaces, which is why I need to alodine it.
