tilt up canopy

Hi everybody. I'm new to the group and still trying to put a lot of things together. Some things I can change as I progress and some I can't. Does anyone know if we can have a tilt up canopy on the 9A. I like the idea of being able to work on the panel and also having a clear view. So far I haven't seen one, only sliding. Thanks Russel

Lots of options

Yeah, you sure can. Building the -9/-9A you choose between tailwheel vs. nosewheel, tip-up vs. slider, electric vs. manual trim, etc.

FYI, the RV-9[A]'s fuselage is virtually identical to the RV-7[A]'s fuselage.

Thanks

Thanks Dan. I know I have a long road in front of me and I will probably have a ton of questions. I'm hoping to be in the air by late 2007.

Russel,

My -9 will have a tip-up. What I have found is most people go with the slider for a number of reasons. Can check the "The Never Ending Debates / Tip up canopy vs. Sliding canopy" section and set the display option for the last year. (Scroll down, it's towards the bottom.) You will see some very good discussions regarding the options.

For me, it was an easy choice. I'm just tall enough that I would look through the canopy bow. So even with the tip-up mod Jerry listed I would not have been happy. However, the slider does look very cool on the ground.

Good luck! Whatever choice you make, tip-up/slider, TW/NW, manual/electric trim, etc. you won't go wrong.

And you can get a really functional tip-up modification to a sliding canopy that allows easy access to the baggage area behind the seats. No panoramic view up front, just a feeling of safety behind the STEEL roll bar that supports the windshield.

I added the Meske tip-up mod. Although I probably won't use it much in the field, I made a modification that I've used many, many times.

I cut out the top of the last inch or so of the side slider rails. Then, the canopy can be slid back to the stops and lifted off the airplane easily.

The lock that Meske provides prevents this from happening accidentally.

It may also be possible to jettison the canopy in flight this way, but I don't plan on trying it.

I also fabricated two stainless scuff plates for the side rails where the slots are cut that allow the canopy to tip up. This helps prevent the galling of the aluminum when tipping the canopy up.
