Extra glass on edges of cowling

Ted Farmin

Well Known Member
I have had to lay up extra glass on the inside top of cowling to get the surface to match the skin at the firewall. Looks like this may be a good idea to do along the side edges as the glass looks very thin and I wonder if there is enough material to suport the rivets? Advise please.

Hinge buildup

Ted,
I applied 2 layers of buildup prior to the hinges. I used good quality glass from AC Spruce and West Systems epoxy. It worked well. I had read that this buildup was recommended to strengthen the edge. After the buildup dried, I ruffed up the hinge and epoxied it before riveting. I let the epoxy dry while being held in place with clecos. Then I redrilled the rivet holes (they get epoxy in them) and riveted the hinge.

Hope this helps,
