I have a non sensitive altimeter I plan to use (daytime VFR only). The unit specifically states "no connection required" and "do not hook to static system as unit is not sealed, and will create static system leak" If I install a transponder and encoder will I be legal in class C? Should I exchange this altimeter for a better one? Thanks in advance!

If you are planning on flying in airspace that requires a transponder you are going to need an accurate altimeter. Since you are going to need a static system to run the encoder it will be very little work to install a sensitive altimeter.
