Gauge choice

If you're only going to do one, it should be CHT. CHT has a limits needed to monitor engine specs. EGT is used primarily for leaning purposes.

Cheap cht/egt

Hmm, far as I know, CHT is pretty standard on most planes. So if you only can have one, that is the one. :)

BUT, for not a lot of money, you can have both in a single package.
Checkout www.mglavionics.com and look at the TC-3 instrument.
$265 (+probes) buys you twelve graphic channels of temps.

For smaller packages, the TC-1 is only $175 (+ probes)

It is electronic, not steam though.

Just my two cents.

I'm only planning on going with either an EGT or CHT gauge. Which is more important?

My vote would be CHT. You can't know or guess what the CHT temps could be, but you can guess at the EGT by how the engine is running. For example, you know the EGT is going to be pretty safe if you are at full rich, and you can't really hurt the engine (by EGT) with the mixture knob when you are below 75% power.

NEVER MIND!

Sorry about that. My mistake. It's oil temp that's required for each air cooled engine.
Previous post corrected.
