IO-540 Hose kit -possible group buy

I've posted this to the Matronics site so if you have seen it and replied there not need to reply again. I have about nine builders already interested, more should lower the price.

RV-10 builders nearing Firewall Forward or engine planning stage. Having not ordered the Firewall Forward kit yet and just planning ahead, I've looked at the plans and determined the following hoses are required for the IO-540 installation:

VA-119 IE VMP HOSE (AN4, 21.5, AIR) $ 34.60
VA-102 FUEL PRES. HOSE (AN4, 15.5, FUEL) $ 58.20
VA-133 OIL PRESS HOSE (AN4, 27.25, OIL) $ 69.00
VA-138 FUEL SUPPLY HOSE (AN6, 14.0, FUEL) $ 69.65
VA-189 FUEL LINE IO-540 (AN6, 25.5, FUEL) $153.45
VA-135 OIL COOLER HOSE (AN8, 16.5, OIL) $ 66.85
VA-190 OIL COOLER HOSE (AN8, 27.0, OIL) $ 95.65

I'm not sure but I think the only Van's hose that is Teflon with the integral firesleeve are the VA-138 and VA-189 hoses. I requested a quote from Aircraft Hose (http://www.aircrafthose.com) for the above hoses ALL Teflon with integral firesleeve except the (VA-119) MAP Hose. They came back with and initial price of $491 for the set. The Van's price for the set of hoses (not all Teflon with integral firesleeve) is about $545. I've asked them if they could offer a greater discount if we could arrange a group buy. I haven't heard back from them yet but wanted to get you thinking.

Just .02 for thought. Those prices are REALLY high! Of course you are getting PMA cert hoses it appears, but racing car hoses are an order of magnitude cheaper and effectively the same product. We did 331JH for under 150 bucks, all teflon as noted above. Note.... the firesleeve was purchased extra and installed by us.

2 topics: Hoses and vents

For those considering using automotive hoses, be sure to actually check them. I have ordered the AN fittings in the past and have noticed that on at least one #6 fitting the internal diameter was closer to a 5, which would have caused reduced flow.

On the second topic, I noticed at OSH that Tim Olsen had the smaller plastic vents that Van's sells in his 10. I originally had those in my RV-6, but went ahead and bit the bullet for the aluminum vents for my RV-10. Yes, they cost substantially more, but I assure you they give substantially more airflow, and stay open or shut as needed. With the front and rear vents open in my 10, there is a verible cyclone within the cabin.

Really high compared to automotive? Isn't everything aviation high compared to automotive? So, let me get this straight, you got ALL automotive Teflon hose for your RV-10 for under $150? You then added external fire sleeve? So now you are up to about $200. The comparable aviation hoses from Van's are $545 ($491 from Aircraft Hose). You save $300 by using automotive hoses. Seems like false economy for such critical components. Thanks but for peace of mind, I'll go with the aviation hoses. I'll skimp elsewhere.

I can offer this perspective on hoses. When I went after hose kits for my IO-540 on the Rocket, I wanted certified, professionally built hose assemblies. I put my list together and sent off quotes to every hose builder I could find on the Internet. The folks at www.aircrafthose.com were the lowest price of all, about 9 prices. AC$ was the highest. Their service was great and the hoses were perfect. If I recall correctly, I paid approximately $550 for teflon hoses with stainless steel braids.

Yep W1,.... I guess 1500 psi working pressure (many times higher burst pressure) , -65 to 400 deg F temp rating, time and true tested on the race track, same materials as A/C hoses.....Yep, probably not enough margin of error for most people ....... And BTW, I am still looking for that PMA stamp/lable on the oil hoses from the RV-6 I aquired for parts that had the FWF kit ordered directly from Van's. Glen

I just received my hoses from PHT.. great service and great prices. ended up saving around $100 for 6 FWF hoses for my RV-7A. Would recommend them for sure!

Status of Hose Group Buy

Hey Bill any news/update on the possible group buy of the IO 540 hoses?

I?ve been out of commission for the last few weeks but I wanted to give you an update on the proposed group buy of the IO-540 hoses from aircrafthose.com. Basically the reply from aircrafthose.com was that because the 124J (Teflon hoses with integral fire) hoses were a specialty item, the price of $495 would be the best they could do even though I had 15 RV-10 builders ready to order. So to summarize $495 for the Teflon hoses with Integral Firesleeve and $432 for Teflon with External Firesleeve. Ask for Ashley.
